St. George, Utah

I am so happy to get away from the still-cold weather in Denver to the desert landscape of Southern Utah!  

Today I finished work early to go hiking at Snow Canyon State Park, with its red sandstone cliffs and views for miles.  What I love about St. George is its small town vibe and anywhere in the city is just minutes away from outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and kayaking.  You can also drive 40 minutes to the massive Zion National Park, which is popular with backcountry campers and day hikers.

🎶 It’s the most wonderful time of the year. 🎶

I mapped out a Christmas market itinerary that includes travel by train between multiple countries in order to experience as much as I can during this trip.  By thoughtfully planning a travel schedule using a Eurail pass, there is plenty of time to work on the train and the Wi-fi is good.  (Travel tip - make sure you get a seat reservation at the time of booking so you can settle in!) 

First up, was a nighttime visit to Dresden, Germany’s Striezelmarkt, the oldest Christmas market in Europe, dating back to 1423.  After filling up on mulled wine and a traditional Christstollen (fruit bread), I headed to the hotel to address my jet lag.

I continued on to more markets in Prague, and I am now en route to Stockholm and Copenhagen via an overnight sleeper train.  For this trip, I booked mostly Airbnb to have a dedicated workspace for Zoom calls. 

The rail trip is definitely a way to use my travel time wisely, so I would love to do this again! It is pretty magical with all of the festivities and I am already planning a return to see some of the markets I missed. 🎄

After seeing a great price on a 21 day cruise to Europe, I decided it is time to work at sea!  This trip  with Celebrity Cruises started in Ft. Lauderdale and stopped in Bermuda, Portugal and we are on the way to Ireland and Amsterdam.

About the logistics…WiFi is pretty good and I paid $22 per day for the full 3 weeks, but I found out later you should watch for Flash sales before you leave to get a better deal.  I booked a room with a balcony because I really need good light and an inspiring view while I work. I have a couch and table to work from, and I also spent some time set up in the Library.

I feel so productive here! My room is quiet, I can grab food at the buffet or order from room service, and when I need a break there are many options steps away to change my environment.

I have been working on a new project to implement a video software system for a long-time client, and chose a location conducive to breaking up long workdays with a variety of activities.

A fun activity for me was attending the Day of the Dead festival in Scottsdale.  It was a great day of churros, musical performances and art installations showcasing catrinas and calaveras. 

Phoenix is a great place to work from! I am 20 minutes from 6 different casinos, an hour from Scottsdale and about 2 hours from Sedona—next time I will check out those energy vortexes!

After a few amazing days in Bangkok, I settled into Lamai Beach.  I am working from Visit Natural Detox Resort for the next 2 weeks.  I opted for the all-inclusive package, which includes a bungalow with a great porch to work from, 3 meals with great vegan options, and fitness classes. So far, I have tried morning hiking, strength training, yoga, meditation, breath work and an ice bath. The real highlight of my time here was training at Lamai Muay Thai followed by watching a live fight event at the stadium.

Long workdays are spent at The Hub Samui, with the best wi-fi connectivity and great food. This is truly work / life balance! 🙂

I am currently working from Stay Wellbeing & Lifestyle Resort , a small, boutique style resort in Rawai with great Wi-Fi!  For less than $200 USD per week I have a pool -access room with a patio to work from, a 24/7 three-story gym, a gorgeous spa and a wide variety of fitness classes including Yoga and Muay Thai.  The cafe menu inspires me to make good food choices -- I am now a fan of green smoothies!

Within 15 minutes, I can go to the beaches, the night markets, the temples and more food stalls and restaurants than I can count.  I also found a great beach-front co-working space called Let's Work where I spent a few days working from a desk with an ocean view, priced at $15 USD for the whole day!

I am currently working from Udara Bali, which is a beach-front resort in Canggu.  I booked an all-inclusive retreat package for $1400 USD which includes one week of Bali-style accommodation, 3 healthy meals and afternoon tea, and access to all of the wellness amenities. There is a meditation cave, whirlpools, sauna, yoga classes, and special events such as Cacao & Kirtan ceremonies, sound bath experiences, and a Sunday festival.  Additional spa services are available.  The service is amazing and it is a really special place.

WIthin an hour's drive, I can go spend the day in the town of Ubud to visit temples, the Sacred Monkey Forest, and do tons of shopping or head to Seminyak to hang out and meet some people at the beach clubs and cocktail bars.

My home base is in Denver, CO, which makes it easy to catch a plane to just about anywhere in the U.S.  I have been working remotely for 5 years, with intermittent travel to client sites which have recently included Miami, New Jersey and Seattle.  However,  I will be expanding my scope to include international locations this year!

Currently, I am engaged in UI/UX design work for a scheduling software tool for one of my commercial clients.  Wireframing is one of my favorite activities because I can tap into my creative side and flex my design skills!
